Doyoon Yoon is a composer from South Korea, currently based in Freiburg, Germany. She has been composing music since the age of nine. Before moving to Germany, she studied composition with Junyoung Park at Kyung Hee University in Korea. She completed her first Master's degree in new music composition with Johannes Schöllhorn at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, followed by a second Master's degree in electronic composition with Alexander Grebtschenko at the same institution.
She is a highly active composer. Her works are experimental in nature, often incorporating live electronics and interactive elements, spanning acoustic, multimedia, and music theatere, with no boundaries. They follow a focused and unapologetically honest path, delving deeply into reflections on the world, such as identity, sexism, discrimination, and more. Her recent works blend these themes into her own unique color, approach, and language, creating deep and honest explorations with her distinctive sensibility and voice.
Her pieces were won the prizes and performed in Germany and Korea. She works with various ensembles, ensemble Recherche, Kompass, TIMF, SWR Experimentalstudio, Jean-François, a French-Canadian sound designer and many musicians.
She was also selected for a residency grant (Aufenthaltsstipendium) in composition at the SWR Experimentalstudio of the Southwest German Broadcasting Corporation, where she will be developing a new work in 2026. The piece is scheduled to be premiered at her solo concert in 2026.
Also was selected through the open call of the Darmstädter Ferienkurse 2025 and is currently working on an experimental new piece for saxophone, which will be premiered during the festival.
One of her experimental pieces 'Generator - Opposite direction(2024)' duo for piano, violoncello and live electronics performed by ensemble Recherche with SWR experimental studio at the concert. This piece has received high praise not only from the composers but also from sound engineers, who recognize its artistic and technical value. This works broadcasted on the SWR Kultur radio on 15th October.
Her representative multimedia piece 'HiBarbie(2023)' for solo percussionist, visual and live electronic was performed multiple times and in ZKM in Next Generation X Electronic Music Festival.
In Freiburg in Germany and Italia she exhibited visual and sound installations.
'Only in it without A and B(2021/22)', 'Schönes Licht schönes Lied(2022/23) - Oper' these are her other experimental multimedia works. 'BOeING to Exit(2024)’ is for 8-channel fixed audio and new instrument Babel by Jean-François, a French-Canadian sound designer. She has also composed numerous acoustic works. 'Metamorphosis(2018)', 'Clickety-clack(2021)' and 'Sosein (2022)' are among her representative pieces, having been performed by Ensemble Project21AND, Ensemble Particle, and Ensemble Recherche. One of her piece ‘some resonance…어떤 울림…(2018)' was selected on Score Follower online library YouTube channel. This piece was won the prize at the 3.International Younghi Pagh Paan Composition Prize in 2018 and performed at Berlin Philharmonic’s Kammersaal as the winner.
